WED: Pacific Beach July Members of the Month

Joe Bettles

Joe has been an extremely hard working member for 2 years. He has been on the Member of the Month radar, pretty much since Day 1. Joe comes in with an incredibly positive attitude no matter the day or the workout. Always friendly to those he knows and those he hasn’t met yet, and constantly looking to improve everything he does. He’s one of the fastest men in the gym, with a motor that is truly impressive to witness. He has cracked multiple top 5 boards in his time at P360, most recently landing on the board or Biathlon and King of the Hill. We are extremely excited to honor Joe and his accomplishments, and also just simply get to know him better. Congratulations Joe!

How old are you, and where are you from?
31, From San Diego.

What do you do for work?
I sell egg burritos at my family’s restaurants – Kono’s and Konito’s.

What do you do for fun outside of P360?
My list sounds so boring  – Travel, Beach, dinner with friends and family. I love getting down to Mexico when I have the chance.

How has P360 affected your life?
More energy and able to eat more burritos. Also it’s super fun!

What are your favorite, and least favorite exercises?
I think King of the Hill is both of these. I love the challenge but when I see it on the board I instantly get sweaty palms.

What is the hardest thing you have done, physically, in the gym?
Full Snatches. I didn’t think my body could do that.

What is your most proud achievement at P360?
King of the Hill leaderboard (I’m coming for you Hansen).

What is a hidden talent of yours?
I studied theatre in college.

What is an embarrassing fact most people don’t know about?
I LOVED Mamma Mia 2.

If money was no concern, what would be your dream job?
Artistic director of a small theatre in the middle of the woods that had an unlimited budget and attracted top talent.

What is the biggest overall improvement you’ve made, since joining P360?
I know my way around a barbell now. I came in knowing nothing.

What’s your favorite song to sing out loud/karoke go-to?
Bowie. Ziggy Stardust. Starman. (But now I’m considering changing to ABBA)

What is the most valuable piece of coaching you’ve received?
Take some weight off and focus on form. Also Lenny’s nutrition programming. It taught me how to reach goals through diet and that peanut butter has an insane amount of fat.

Which public figure or celebrity would you put in the dunk tank?
Tucker Carlson.

What’s your favorite place to eat in San Diego?
The Grill at Torrey Pines Lodge.

What famous person (alive or not) would you  most like to have a drink with and what would you buy them?

Christmas Vacation
Y Tu Mama Tambien

Do you sleep with the sheets tucked in or out?
Out.

What’s a funny story from your childhood?
My 8 year old friends and I started a band in 1992 that we called LOL. I didn’t know what LOL meant but my older cousin said it was cool. We sold tapes to our parents of our hit songs: “I was in the Library” and “Don’t be so happy to me”. I still think we should have made it big.

Crack Shack >> Salt and Straw.

If you could travel to any point in the past, where would you go?
Elizabethan era England.

What’s your favorite thing about training at P360?
My favorite thing is probably that I enjoy coming. I genuinely like the people and the coaches. Also, the programming is always so well done. Whenever I think, “this PSC looks lame,” I am always wrong. I don’t check the programming before coming anymore because I know it will be well thought out and probably something I need.

What is your biggest goal moving into 2018?
Squats. Better and heavier.

Franziska Pohl

Franzie has been silently killing it in the gym since 2015. She has always been a thorough member, paying close attention to coaching cues, adding to the bar when told she’s got more in the tank than she thinks, and always pushing herself to be better every day. Recently Franzie has taken her nutrition to the top of the priority list, and seen a lot of success. Losing fat, gaining muscle, and slaying PRs left and right. Deadlift, Jerk, Front Squats, Cleans, Flight Club, to mention a few of the things that Franzie has improved upon. L2 Barbell Club, L1 Flight club, and closer to her first pull-ups than ever before. Quite simply, she shows up, seeks out coaching, and does her due diligence to take care of herself, which has all resulted in some big time results that we are super stoked to congratulate her on! Keep it up Franzie!

How old are you, and where are you from?
I’m 25 from a town in Germany called Schaebisch Gmund just outside of Stuttgart.

What do you do for work?
I’m starting my own business to help international students and interns in San Diego become more integrated in the local lifestyle.

What do you do for fun outside of P360?
Ducote and I own a dog that needs a lot of attention! We go on hikes, to the dog beach, dog park and everything else that involves our crazy malinois puppy. She’s really smart so teaching her new commands is a lot of fun too.

How has P360 affected your life?
Starting a business in a different country can be super overwhelming. Being able to work out and lift weights helps me get in a better mood and enjoy life more. The fact that I’m better than I was the week before is super motivating and this motivations helps me with my work as well.

What are your favorite, and least favorite exercises?
My favorite exercises are all olympic weightlifting movements. My least favorite exercises are definitely biathlon, triathlon and sprints.

What is the hardest thing you have done, physically, in the gym?
Doing Mr. Purple. Even though it’s a lot of olympic lifting which I love, it killed me!

What is your most proud achievement at P360?
Flight Club Level 1. I was always afraid to jump high. And never thought I would ever get into a Flight Club EVER. Being able to jump 36” multiple times makes me really proud.

What is a hidden talent of yours?
Hmm I can spot all germans here. Just by the way they dress and behave. Ducote and I even started a game and I would guess and then we would listen to the language they speak. I’m usually right :D

What is an embarrassing fact most people don’t know about?
When I’m embarrassed about something I smile and try to play it cool but I can definitely feel the tears in my eyes and I always wonder if people can see it.

If money was no concern, what would be your dream job?
I would own my own Dog Rescue Ranch that has an agility course and other dog sports available.

What is the biggest overall improvement you’ve made, since joining P360?
I’ve become stronger in all of my lifts and running doesn’t feel as bad anymore.

What’s your favorite song to sing out loud/karoke go-to?
“I Want It That Way” by the backstreet boys.

What is the most valuable piece of coaching you’ve received?
For me there were many little valuable things that helped improve my lifts a lot. But my all time favorite was pointing out my toes more at my Snatch starting position. It just blew my mind how much better it felt. (Thanks, Julianne.
