We’re back with another edition of Performance360 Members of the Month.
As always, the member of the month award is decided by our coaches getting together and nominating who stood out to us each in the areas of attitude, effort and performance. We take pride in our votes and take the handing out of member of the month quite seriously. To win it means an individual stood out above hundreds of other hard working folks and is truly deserving of the honor.
Jarred Collins
Jarred is a regular at all of the midday classes. In short, Jarred does his training right. He is constantly asking questions and always trying to find a way to get better. He works very closely with Julianne on his mobility and is always attentive to his body and how he can improve the function of it. Aside from having an overall great attitude, Jarred recently hit Level 4 Mile Club with a sub 5:30 time, running laps around people at the gym half his age. Jarred is a regular at Barbell class and has seen his strength steadily increase across all of his major lifts.
Get to Know Jarred
Age, where are you from?
43, I’m originally from New York.
What do you do for work?
I’m a math professor at Mesa College and USD.
What do you do for fun?
Cycling, cooking, golf, movies and obviously P360.
Favorite and least favorite exercise?
Favorite would probably be deadlifts and least favorite would be the damn burpee.
What’s the most valuable bit of coaching you’ve received at P360?
As most would say, that’s a tough question. All of the coaches are excellent and sometimes it takes just the right verbiage to make it click. I have had that experience at different times with all of them. If I had to just choose one piece of advice, I would say it was to be patient and persistent.
What is your most proud achievement at P360 so far?
Aside from this, my one mile run.
What’s the hardest thing you’ve done physically at the gym?
That’s probably a toss-up among most of those friggen timed Friday challenges. Those things are ass-kickers for me.
If money was no concern, what would be your dream job?
Ari Gold, super agent to the stars.
Embarrassing fact most people don’t know?
I’m sorry but those files are permanently sealed.
Hidden talent most people don’t know?
I have a decent green thumb and about 40 bonsai trees.
If you were an ice cream flavor, what would you be and why?
There was this pumpkin flavored ice cream from a small farm in Connecticut that the family would only produce around Thanksgiving. It was like 20% butterfat and could double as lip balm in a pinch. That stuff was other worldly…
If you could teleport to any point in the past, where would you go?
So many choices here. I would definitely want to check out Ancient Greece though.
Favorite naughty food?
Potato chips, potato chips and more potato chips.
What’s the biggest overall improvement you had made since joining?
Other than back squats, I’d never done any Olympic lifts in my life. Watching my lifts increase and the drastic changes my body has experienced subsequently has definitely been interesting in a very good way. Huge shout out to the coaches for making that possible. Thank you.
What was your favorite cartoon growing up?
Without a doubt, Bugs Bunny. That is one funny rabbit.
Famous person you’d most like to have a drink with, and what drink would you buy them?
Leonardo Da Vinci. I would buy him several IPA cocktails from Craft & Commerce and after he got good and buzzed I would ask him what that goofy smirk on the Mona Lisa was all about.
What’s a funny story from your childhood?
Growing up we had a shed with only one key on a chain loop. One day I was spinning it wildly around my finger, of course it got away, and got stuck in a tree. I luckily managed to get it down before my dad got home but didn’t realize that my mother had seen the whole thing. A couple of days later, guess what happens again… So my dad pulls up and I grab him before he can go inside and I apologize profusely. He says it’s ok, pulls the car next to the tree, gets a long stick and finally gets the key down. Just as I think I’ve gotten away with it, out comes mom yelling, “did he do that again?” I don’t remember what happened the rest of that day.
Which public figure or celebrity would you like to put in a dunk tank?
Have to be The Donald, no question. Can I dunk him twice?
You have one song and movie on a desert island. What are they?
Beethoven’s Ninth and My Cousin Vinny. Gotta cover all the bases here.
What is your biggest goal for the rest of 2015?
To try and crack into the Level 1 (maybe 2) of pull-up, barbell and box jump clubs.
Brenna Bandy
Brenna has been on a tear for the better part of three months, hitting PRs in her deadlift (255#), clean (135#), squat (185#), jerk (125#) and most recently into Club Forged. Already the number two women’s mile time in the gym (5:44), she is just recently focusing on her strength and is only scratching the surface on her potential.
Get to Know Brenna
Age, where are you from?
27. Born and raised in the suburbs of New York.
What do you do for work?
I work at an insurance brokerage proposing and editing quotes for law firms. Long overdue field change back to health and wellness coming 2016!
What do you do for fun?
Aside from P360, anything that kicks my ass and pokes at my comfort zone. I get a thrill out of seeing how far my mind can push my body and testing my grit. On a relaxing note, I’m all about writing, exploring, food consumption, coloring (like, in coloring books), playing JENGA, but mostly just being around the ones that make me laugh and keep me on my toes. And I’ll always take an at-home powwow over the bar scene.
Favorite and least favorite exercise?
They’re a new first place holder and not my best, but cleans. Ring rows can suck it. Depending on the day, running could be the answer to both.
What’s the most valuable bit of coaching you’ve received at P360?
While back squatting, Julianne told me to pull down on the barbell. It initially seemed counterproductive to the standing back up element, but it made a world of difference.
What is your most proud achievement at P360 so far?
My 5:44 mile. Most of my life I was never good or fast at running. I really had to bust ass to learn how to run efficiently.
What’s the hardest thing you’ve done physically at the gym?
My 5:44 mile. It really, really sucked.
If money was no concern, what would be your dream job?
A traveling food critic. I was always envious of Guy Fieri minus his hair and waistline.
Embarrassing fact most people don’t know?
Oh, this one hurts. My confirmation name is Jermaine. Reason being that I really loved Jermaine Dupri.
Hidden talent most people don’t know?
I can bust a rhyme.
If you were an ice cream flavor, what would you be and why?
Neapolitan – I like to sample of bit of everything in life rather than sticking to one thing. I also can’t make a damn decision for the life of me.
If you could teleport to any point in the past, where would you go?
There are a couple of decades from the 20th century I’d love to check out mainly because of the music, but definitely the late 1700s. So much crazy shit went down.
Favorite naughty food?
I’m sorry there can’t be one: pizza, good ol’ Kraft mac and cheese, grilled cheese, cheeseburgers. Carbs with cheese.
What’s the biggest overall improvement you had made since joining?
Letting go of my fear of lifting heavy. I used to think being in shape meant being thin and it caused more stress than anything else. Now I just want to throw around heavy shit and hopefully get a nicer ass in the process.
What was your favorite cartoon growing up?
Alice in Wonderland all day, er’day.
Famous person you’d most like to have a drink with, and what drink would you buy them?
Frank Sinatra. I know he was a JD guy, so it would have to be Jack on the rocks.
What’s a funny story from your childhood?
When I was 3 years old, I was at one of my Dad’s baseball games and got stung by a bee. When asked what happened, my response through the hysteria was, “Stupid fucking beeeee…” I’ve always been a real lady.
Which public figure or celebrity would you like to put in a dunk tank?
Kanye West.
You have one song and movie on a desert island. What are they?
Song: “That’s the Way” by Led Zeppelin. Movie: The Sandlot.
What is your biggest goal for the rest of 2015?
To quit my job and start doing what I love.
A big congratulations to both Brenna and Jarred. Please make sure to congratulate both next time you see them around the gym.
