Referral Contest: 4-HR Boat Rental

As a reminder, the contest for the free 4-hour boat rental has roughly 10 more days to it and Amy Turner is in the lead!  Nothing reeks of summer more than taking out five or six friends on the bay one weekend, cracking some cold ones, blasting the tunes and rubbing it in all of your friends that don’t live in San Diego’s faces.  Let us put that experience on our tab.

Here are the current standings:

  • Amy Turner – 2

What’s the Deal with: Fruit

We’ve received a lot of questions about fruit since more and more people are starting to read the Food Science board and see it under ‘Yellow Light’ category.  The fact is, it’s bad and lazy coaching to just say ‘fruit is good for you”.  It certainly is, but people also need to be aware of the effects it can potentially have your on weight loss goals.

Here are some quick points about fruit:

  • Fruit is loaded with antioxidants that destroy harmful free radicals in our bodies.
  • Fruit is very high in good fiber which has been shown to benefit our digestive system and GI tract.
  • Fruit is also very high in sugar, with the average fruit serving containing about 25g of fructose carbs, which in reality, can cause problems if you are trying to lose weight.

The bottom line: fruit is better than a donut, so if it’s one or the other always pick fruit.  However, you can get a lot of the same nutrients from vegetables that you can get from fruit, so double up on the veggies and cut your fruit consumption if you’re eating it multiple times per day.

Simply be aware of the implications it can have on your weight loss and adjust accordingly.  I prefer that people stick to fruit to just post-training, and if you must eat it in the  morning then be sure to have it with a protein source as well to slow the burst of sugar into your bloodstream.

Have a great week,

Dave
