P360 Air Quality and Ventilation Tests

Recently, the county revealed that just 0.4% of new COVID cases were contact traced to a gym setting, so we wanted to find out why our industry has been so effective in this fight and in doing so came across an air quality test that measures CO2 parts per million (PPM) as a potential determinant if people are breathing in surrounding aerosols.

We decided to test our air and facility ventilation quality with a simple consumer tool and received the following results:

PB: 593 PPM
Bay Park: 769 PPM
OB: 698 PPM
Outside Air: 550 PPM

We ran multiple tests at different parts of each gym, during class to ensure that the readings were taken when C02 2as being expelled.

While the science is still emerging and we’d never rely on this for stand alone decision making (or tell this means that we’re 100% safe), there is precedent guideline from the global scientific community that suggests the following tiers:

  • 2000+ PPM as “unacceptable”
  • 1000 – 2000 PPM as “questionable”
  • Under 1000 PPM as “hygienically harmless” with a “target value of 700 ppm in times of an epidemic.”

For reference, the outside air was between 500 – 600 PPM.

Here is a helpful article that expands upon these statements.
