OB Members of the Month: 2020-Block 1

Amanda Perez

Amanda has been a consistent, sweet, and engaging member from day 1.  She always had a motor to work through circuits at a very fast pace.  Enter the Arrival of the Fittest and entire gym got to witness a whole other side.  From week 1 Amanda shot out of the gates in her workouts, setting incredible benchmark times for Mr. Brown, Triathlon, and Hells Bells.  Only later in the block did she go ahead and best all those times. She is now a member of Flight, Lean n Mean, and Prison Yard clubs. She set personal bests in her strength movements deadlifts and back squats, she is 2nd on the gym board for her Mr. Brown time.  Let’s talk about her body composition changes during this period. Down 4 lbs of fat and up 2 lbs of muscle. To say she had one of the most impressive stretches in the gyms history is not an overstatement. Congratulations Amanda!

Nicholas Ponting

What can you say about Nick, but he is the nicest and most welcoming member in the gym.  Anytime I see a trial or a brand new member in a class with Nick. It is a certainty that Nick is engaging that member and doing whatever he can to make them feel apart of the class and the community. It is members like Nick, that allow a gym community to grow to where we are today. As a Member, nothing changes.  He is proficient, strong, and athletic but carries zero ego when a coach has a suggestion or a cue that will help him improve. This last block Nick has made some serious strides in the strength department, Pr’s in Deadlifts and Squats, that earned him Level 2 barbell club. I have a feeling that 2020 is going to be a huge year for Nick.  I am glad that I’ll be there to watch it go down.

How old are you, and where are you from?
I’m 28. Spokane, WA.

What do you do for work?
I’m an actor/singer & set designer. I’m in my 2nd year of graduate school at UCSD working on my MFA in Set Design.

What do you do for fun outside of P360?
Hanging with Megan, binging shows on Netflix, golfing, soccer, board/card games with Kami/Victor, cooking, and ALWAYS watching The Office.

How has P360 affected your life?
Megan and I moved to San Diego in the fall of 2018, which is when I started graduate school. Our first apartment was literally across the street from the gym. After settling in, and always seeing the workouts, and people running by us as we walked by the gym, we knew we had to join! From day one P360 has been a way for me to recharge, let out stress, prepare for the day, and meet new people. I decided to make my mental and physical health a priority in a way I hadn’t before, and P360 has been there every step of the way. The classes have become a non-negotiable in my schedule. The result has been an improvement in all aspects of my life; professionally and personally.

What are your favorite, and least favorite exercises?
I absolutely love cleans and snatches. I loathe the assault bike. I know I shouldn’t because I know it’s good for me, but anytime I see it on the board, I die a little on the inside.

What is the hardest thing you have done, physically, in the gym?
Mr. Purple. I’ve done it twice now and both times it destroyed me.

What is your most proud achievement at P360?
I just hit Barbell Level 2 and I felt very proud of that!

What is a hidden talent of yours?
Most people at the gym don’t know that I am an actor/singer/designer. Other than that, another one is that I’m a stained-glass artist. My Mom was one her whole life, and taught my brother and I when we were young.

What is an embarrassing fact most people don’t know about?
I’ve been pooped on my birds enough times now that I think I am being targeted.

If money was no concern, what would be your dream job?
Most people don’t go into the performing arts for the money, so the boring answer is what I am doing now. Otherwise, a board/card game reviewer sounds like a pretty fun gig.

What is the biggest overall improvement you’ve made, since joining P360?
I think my form (all around) has improved a lot. It has been something I have really tried to prioritize before loading more weight on the bar. I think being patient and trusting myself and the process has helped with my overall performance and strength.

What’s your favorite song to sing out loud/karoke go-to?
All of Me – John Legend

What is the most valuable piece of coaching you’ve received?
One day when we were doing deadlifts, Lenny had me take off weight and focus on form. From that day forward, I stopped worrying about always adding more weight, and prioritized improving my form. Like I mentioned above, the result has been better performance, better recovery, and improvement in strength.

Which public figure or celebrity would you put in the dunk tank?
Obama

Mike’s Taco Club.

I wasn’t sure, so I asked Megan. Her response: “You start with them tucked in, because I tuck them in every day, but you always yank them out in your sleep”.

What’s a funny story from your childhood?
My friend Joey and I once tried to repel out of his second story bedroom window; using bed sheets as rope, and our brothers as counterweight. We were 7ish. They were 4ish. Our parent’s weren’t too happy.

Pastelito de Queso from Azucar. If you haven’t had it yet, go after you read this. Seriously.

I want to get into Barbell Level 3, Prison Yard 1, and improve my mobility in both my clean and my snatch
