As always, these members were voted on by our staff.  They represent hard workers who have great attitudes, hit some impressive results for themselves over the last month and all around great members of the gym.

Male: Derek Schultz

Derek is a regular of the midday classes and had a huge month.  After setting the record in the 1000m row, Derek hit a 400# deadlift, Level II Barbell Club, a 165# OH Squat and achieved his first muscle ups.  He works very hard, is always smiling and introducing himself to his classmates, never complains and is an all around pleasure to have at Performance360.

Get to Know Derek

Age, where are you from? I am 27 years old and from Great Falls, Montana.

What do you do for work (or school)? I am currently an instructor in the United States Coast Guard.

What do you do for fun? I love to surf, fish, spearfish, hunt, mountain bike, rock climb, snowboard, party. All of the above.

What motivates you each day? Oh you know, the same as everyone. The never ending quest for washboard abs.

Favorite and least favorite exercise? I hate running and was definitely stoked on those muscle ups.

What is your most proud achievement at P360 so far? I think it would be holding a gym record in the 1000m row. It’s such a grueling event. For a few weeks that is, haha. Until Kyle Atkinson got it back.

If money was no concern, what would be your dream job? Definitely a hunting or fishing guide.

Embarrassing fact most people don’t know? I failed the push-ups test in boot camp. Twice. Only had to be able to do 29 in a minute. I’ve come a long way.

Hidden talent most people don’t know? I can watch Netflix for 8 hours straight. Without breaking a sweat.

Favorite cheat meal? Mountain Dew and a cheeseburger dog from 7-11. Yes.

What’s the biggest overall improvement you had made since joining? I think gaining confidence lifting heavier weights and learning/knowing the technique.

Famous person you’d most like to have a drink with, and what drink would you buy them? As many shots of tequila as Lindsay Lohan can handle!

You have one song, one movie and one TV show a desert island are they? Tarzan boy-Baltimora is my song and Dumb and Dumber is my movie.

What is your biggest goal for the rest of 2013? To try and run more often and shorten my mile time.

Female: Laura Dale

Laura has been a member at P360 for about a year and a half now and is always trying to get better.  She asks more constructive questions than almost any member of the gym and is always paying very close attention to her form and her coaching.  Although quiet, she is always polite and encouraging to her fellow station partners and is always looking to get better every single time she comes to the gym.  Laura is a great example of consistency with her efforts.

Age, where are you from? I am 28, from Rochester, NY. Home of the Garbage Plate & Wegman’s!

What do you do for work (or school)? I work at a physical therapy clinic where I deal with health insurance. Not fun stuff. I am actively pursuing a new career path, so if anyone knows of anything opening up, let me know!

What do you do for fun? Anything that involves being outside or exploring. San Diego is the perfect playground for outdoor appreciation.

What motivates you each day? I am always striving to be a better version of myself. There is always room to improve, in all facets of life. I don’t want to look back and think I ever just gave up and didn’t strive for better.

Favorite and least favorite exercise? Squats and surprisingly hang cleans are my favorite. Anything cardio related I loathe. If you’re ever worried about being slow, just look behind you, and I’ll be there. Something I need to work on but it makes me feel like death.

What is your most proud achievement at P360 so far? Holy crap, this! Completely unexpected! Performance wise I would say my recent 135# squat was pretty bodacious, but overall I’m really proud of myself for committing to the gym, week in and week out for over a year. Making the gym a priority in my life has helped my confidence and time management ten fold. I’m also proud of learning how to be inspired by others around me, but not to compare my progress to their’s. Sometimes I still have those moments of feeling less than great, but when a coach like Robby walks by to check my form and says “Textbook. Nice work”, then I know I’m doing what I need to do.

If money was no concern, what would be your dream job?  I would build houses for hurricance victims, bring meals to homeless veterans, send single moms off to spa days, and overall just find any reason to be selfless and help someone that otherwise wouldn’t ask for help.

Embarrassing fact most people don’t know? I chipped a tooth and broke my glasses when I passed out at band camp in 6th grade. #nerd

Hidden talent most people don’t know? My knowledge of 90’s pop culture is pretty decent.

Favorite cheat meal? Schaller’s cheeseburger. Pizza Port. Yogurtland. In n’ Out. I’ll take all of it.

What’s the biggest overall improvement you had made since joining? Just being willing to try, letting go of the fear of looking weird, or possibly failing. You don’t know until you try. That’s how I’ve hit my PRs! And just overall confidence, I’m pretty introverted, and the gym has really helped me to open up and meet some fantastic people!

Famous person you’d most like to have a drink with, and what drink would you buy them? Mindy Kaling, and I would force her to drink Maker’s Mark against her will.

You have one song, one movie and one TV show a desert island are they? Song- That’s My Kinda Night by Luke Bryan. Movie- The Sandlot or Pitch Perfect. TV Show- gotta go with Friends or Golden Girls. I can’t pick just one!!

What is your biggest goal for the rest of 2014? Keep making goals and crushing them! Specifically 30” box jump, strict pull-ups sans bands, OH squats are my new love, TGU, and just focusing on form. I just want to keep pushing myself to get better.

Thanks guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This gym has done so much for my life and I love the P360 community!

Age, where are you from? I’m 32 and from Fairmont, Minnesota.

What do you do for work (or school)? I became certified last year and recently started as a Personal Trainer at a gym in Mission Valley. I’m going to school to become certified in nutrition, as well!

What do you do for fun? I love reading, learning, hiking in the mountains or playing in the ocean, solving riddles, riding on the backs of dolphins, creating things and skydiving!

What made you decide to try the gym? I’ve been stalking the gym since I moved to SD and finally bit the bullet. Couldn’t pass up a challenge!

What made you want to join the gym? I saw incredible strength results from others. I truly wanted to find a place where I could feel like I was being challenged and accepted by folks just like me. The atmosphere is light, motivating and energetic. Cheering friends on while they reach their goals and receiving the same in return creates a great experience for each workout. I enjoy watching new people complete the workouts along side me. The coaches help me make the smallest changes in form sometimes which can make the biggest difference in proficiency! And yoga. Restorative yoga. I’ve signed up for like, the whole next month already!

What are your favorite and least favorite kinds of workouts or movements so far? I seriously love everything! High on the list are deadlifts and front squats! Learning hang cleans is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. The only thing that’s really difficult for me so far are OH KB swings. The bell has a mind of its own, I swear. Halp. But- defeat your weaknesses and they will become your strengths.

If money was no concern, what would be your dream job? Traveling the world to hug cuddly animals and have conversations with as many people as possible about their lives.

Embarrassing fact most people don’t know? I’m an astrology nerd. Not like foo foo daily horoscopes. I’m talkin’ real mathematical astrology. :)

Hidden talent most people don’t know? Drawing, painting, ceramics. I have an art degree.

Favorite cheat meal? Giant burritos forever and a cupcake!!!!!!!

What’s one physical improvement you had made since joining? Learning to be more aware of my body without staring in a mirror during a workout. I’m noticing that because of doing some exercises, in turn I’m getting better at others.

Famous person you’d most like to have a drink with, and what drink would you buy them? Vince Vaughn, Red Zinfandel. He is hilarious and wine laughs are the best.

You have one song, one movie and one TV show a desert island are they? Song: Time of Your Song- Matisyahu. Movie: The Lion King. TV: MacGuyver, so I would find a way off!

What is your biggest goal for the rest of 2014? To be successful in my work.

Thank you so much for recognizing me as a Member of the MonthM! You can really learn a lot about yourself when you understand that the only thing ever holding you back in life is fear. Lots of lessons to learn. When I was lazy, overweight and unhealthy I never imagined I would be where I am today. I just started moving. Just freaking do it. Like Indiana Jones, step off the edge and the bridge will appear! I show up every day not only for myself but hopefully to inspire and share with others. It has been a really great first month at P360 and I am so excited to #BecomeMore. ;D
