Have To Vs. Get To
This current version of our society has polarized most of us. It’s hardened our opinions and made us a more extreme version of ourselves, good and bad, in nearly every aspect of our views and personality. Where we once might have had a wishy washy take we are now boldly opinionated.
A few weeks ago we had a member show up to class and mentioned to the coach that he was “boycotting” Performance360 the first few weeks because of all of the “ridiculous” measures we had in place for your safety. I suppose he felt it was…too much? The resentment he felt towards us trying to be safe apparently overwhelmed his desire to stay healthy and resulted in the decision take a stand against our modifications at the cost of his own vitality.
Yet, on the flip side are the hundreds of other members presently adapting to the logistic and personal schedule challenges and getting it done with the understanding that if you get too hung on preferences you’ll lose sight of the fulfillment of basic needs. Enduring a pesky waitlist for class times, driving an extra few minutes. But adapting nonetheless.
So which are you? The have to boycotter or the get to adapter? How do you view your current access to fitness? Do you get to workout at the gym right now when most others are closed, in the beautiful sunshine with fresh air and positive vibes? Or do you have to drive an extra few minutes in order to go to class. Do I love the fact that we have to funnel three gyms worth of members into one? I certainly don’t, yet with this set-up and these people, we get to stay in business.
The mental margin between get to and have to is razor thin. On one side of the spectrum lies the literal potential for human evolution and a flexible mindset that yields progress. On the other end, personal anguish awaits. The get to’s will make it through COVID-19 reasonably unfettered while the have to’s will struggle in nearly every conceivable way they engage society.
The good news is that it’s a choice and take it from someone who is often very guilty of have to mentality. Adopting a get to mindset has been a personal life saver for my own anxiety and frankly, a whole hell of a lot more fun way to live in this version of planet Earth.
It’s amazing what we still actually get to do when we distill our day down to our basic needs.
