FRI: PB November Members of the Month

THIS SATURDAY: Just a reminder that this Saturday is our Holiday Party, Ugly Sweater version. 3 pm at Maverick’s.

Kelly Kehm

Kelly has been a member for  a few years now, and we have seen her work hard and stay committed through some very big phases of life! She’s been a law student, trained for a figure competition, had her first baby, and came back after with a fire for herself and her son to stay healthy and make the gym a priority as Kash has looked on from the stroller cheering Mom on. In the last couple of months, Kelly has achieved Level 2 Lean and Mean, made the Record Board for several time challenges (including breaking a couple records), as well as found PRs on her strength lifts, from PRE-baby! We are so excited to honor and congratulate Kelly’s hard work, as well as excited to see where 2019 takes her!

How old are you, and where are you from?
I am 33. I’ve lived in San Diego for 5 years now. Born and bred in small town Iowa. Spent my teens and most of my twenties in Scottsdale, Arizona.

What do you do for work?
Former nightclub general manager… turned law school student working with a criminal defense attorney and MOM to a 1 year old! I graduate law school this May!!!

What do you do for fun outside of P360?
I love the outdoors, hiking, traveling… and now chasing Kashton around!!

How has P360 affected your life?
I feel like finding P360 helped me find myself again. I spent my whole life training and competing, and sometime in adulthood I lost my way. At P360 I get to compete again, against myself mainly, but others too… and I guess I never realized how much I missed being in a competitive, team environment. It was the essence of my being for so many years, so it feels good to be part of that again.

What are your favorite, and least favorite exercises?
Deadlifting is probably my favorite, along with timed challenges that involve the erg. Snatches are my least favorite, but I’m starting to like them more, and pull ups… I hate pull ups, only because I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to do one.

What is the hardest thing you have done, physically, in the gym?
Just coming back after having a baby and sticking with it!!! I gained 60 pounds. SIXTY!!! When I first came back 6 weeks after giving birth I felt like I had a 60 pound weight vest on!! I was so slow and everything was so hard!! It has gotten a lot better, but man, those first couple months were tough!!

What is your most proud achievement at P360?
My 5 minute row distance from years ago managed to stay in the top 5 until just recently. But last month I somehow got in the top 5 for Mr. Orange, so I’m back up on the board again!!! I’m coming for that row though.

What is a hidden talent of yours?
I have a photographic memory.

What is an embarrassing fact most people don’t know about?
I used to have some pretty serious hoarder tendencies, especially when it came to old clothes and shoes (which makes no sense now b/c I rotate the same 4 outfits). I have gotten a lot better. Especially since having a child. But I still have ALL of my basketball shoes since 6th grade, and every tape and CD I’ve ever owned.

If money was no concern, what would be your dream job?
At this current moment in my life – To be a full time stay-at-home mom!! (even though I am completely aware this is one of the hardest jobs there is) However, I would love to just hang out with little dude all day, and go to the gym and make cute Mickey Mouse shaped food and take baby music classes at Gymboree and have play dates at the park.

What is the biggest overall improvement you’ve made, since joining P360?
Besides making working out a lifestyle again… it would have to be Olympic lifts. I had never done snatches, cleans, or jerks before coming to P360 I don’t think. Snatches and cleans did not come naturally to me AT ALL. I didn’t think my body would really ever cooperate and figure out how to do them. Now, I can actually do a snatch, with plates on the bar even, and I can clean 135 pounds. And I can do them both properly!

What’s your favorite song to sing out loud/karoke go-to?
Warren G – Regulate
However, right now I would crush “Baby Shark”, I’ve even got a dance for it.

What is the most valuable piece of coaching you’ve received?
There was a time Coach Chris told me something was too heavy for me, and there was a time Coach Julianne told me I needed to go heavier. Both were right. I can trust our coaches because they pay attention, they know their shit, and there’s days that I can go either way…too hard or too cautious, and the fact that they know is what’s valuable to me.

Which public figure or celebrity would you put in the dunk tank?
Donald Trump

What’s your favorite place to eat in San Diego?
The Red Fox Room.
It’s not for everyone. It’s old and dark and they’ve got people my grandparents age singing jazz and playing the sax. I love it. It’s my favorite place to have a drink, eat some steak and imagine an era when the musicians were my age, and piano bars and jazz were cool.

What famous person (alive or not) would you  most like to have a drink with and what would you buy them?
Ruth Bader Ginsburg – a bottle of Opus One.

What are your Top 3 movies of all time?
Labyrinth…
and then it’s a toss up between Boyz n the Hood, Memento and Avatar. Odd, I know.

Do you sleep with the sheets tucked in or out?
Completely out, always.

What’s a funny story from your childhood?
My first day of kindergarten, I convinced my friend Brett to play tic-tac-toe with me during nap time… on the carpet… with a big orange crayon. That pretty much sums up my behavior for the rest of my childhood.

What’s your favorite naughty food?
Pizza and Oreos.

If you could travel to any point in the past, where would you go?
Summer after 6th grade. I don’t know why but it is still my favorite time. Summer in Iowa is something to experience. I grew up in a little river town where it was normal for kids be gone all day playing outside and come home when the street lights came on. No cell phones. All we cared about was playing sports and listening to music.

What’s your favorite thing about training at P360?
I went from being brand new… to someone on the leaderboards… to a wannabe fitness competitor… to pregnant… to a single mom that has to bring her baby to class… and I’ve never felt unimportant, or uncomfortable, or unwanted.

What is your biggest goal moving into 2019?
Stay consistent. Stay focused. Continue to improve. GET STRONGER! GET FASTER! Be able to wear shorts again.

Brett Marquis

Brett joined P360 a few years ago, and the coaches haven’t stopped talking about his performance in the gym  since.Being  a natural athlete as well as a super nice guy that’s highly coachable, has produced in a lot of results for Brett over the years. In the last few months, we’ve seen even him kick it up a couple of notches. Noticeably putting in a lot of effort on Weightlifting technique, and challenging his strength, but also pushing the pace and setting the tone, consistently choosing the Adv side of the board for conditioning as well, and holding a high standard within that choice. Brett continues to find himself achieving clubs, making Record boards and pushing the top of the pack, and if the first few years of his time here have shown us anything, it’s that we will be talking about Brett and his achievements for quite a while. Congratulations Brett, we are stoked for you and excited to see what 2019 brings!

How old are you, and where are you from?
I am 30 and I grew up in Encinitas.

What do you do for work?
I am an Operations Manager at an aerospace manufacturing company called Collins Aerospace. We build nacelle components for commercial aircraft customers like Boeing and Airbus.

What do you do for fun outside of P360?
Good food and drinks with friends, country concerts, traveling, watching/ playing sports, a good movie. I enjoy the outdoors, heading up in the mountains or getting out in the water here in San Diego. I go up to Lake Tahoe every summer with my family and my dad and I recently took a fishing trip up to the eastern sierras that was a lot of fun.

How has P360 affected your life?
P360 has had such a positive impact on my life. It is an integral part of my routine and I always look forward to the workouts. I always feel good after a P360 session. It has not only improved my fitness, but I also learn something new almost every class which has been a huge benefit.

What are your favorite, and least favorite exercises?
My favorite is the clean and my least favorite is the jerk

What is the hardest thing you have done, physically, in the gym?
We just did PPB AC2 this last month and that was pretty rough, haha. Also any conditioning that involves the assault bike. Nothing puts me on my ass quite like that machine.

What is your most proud achievement at P360?
Any time I’ve made it on the leaderboard for a timed challenge, I’ve been proud. There are some very impressive athletes that go to this gym and when I’m able to compete with those guys and gals it’s humbling.

What is a hidden talent of yours?
I can touch the tip of my nose with my tongue

What is an embarrassing fact most people don’t know about?
I’m a pretty big Star Wars fan and in high school a group of friends and I once spent an entire Saturday watching all 6 movies (that existed at the time) sequentially… It was awesome.

If money was no concern, what would be your dream job?
Sports/ Outdoor journalist?? If I could travel the world experiencing, learning about, and writing about different outdoor activities, games, sporting events, and fitness that would be amazing.

What is the biggest overall improvement you’ve made, since joining P360?
Snatch. I still have a lot to work on, but I’ve seen a lot of improvement in my technique and mobility. That was a lift that I had never done prior to joining P360 and it is such a technical lift, so I struggled at first.

What’s your favorite song to sing out loud/karaoke go-to?
This is tough… If you know me, I’m usually not afraid to sing along to pretty much any song. Karaoke would have to be Bohemian Rhapsody, and the song I’ve been belting in my car recently is Drowning Man by Eric Church.

What is the most valuable piece of coaching you’ve received?
There’s been so many, but here are a couple: Proper bracing during lifts “fill the cannister”, and maintaining “internal torque” when holding a sand bag. Hopefully I described those correctly…

Which public figure or celebrity would you put in the dunk tank?
The actor who plays King Joffrey from GOT… He would need be in full his full King Joffrey wardrobe too

What’s your favorite place to eat in San Diego?
C Level/ Island Prime

What famous person (alive or not) would you  most like to have a drink with and what would you buy them?
Pat Tillman and I would buy him an ice cold beer

What are your Top 3 movies of all time?
This is so hard, I love movies… The Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, and Remember the Titans

Do you sleep with the sheets tucked in or out?
The sheets are definitely tucked out

What’s a funny story from your childhood?
I’ve been told that on multiple occasions as a kid I fell out of my bed without waking up. My parents would hear a thud, run down to my room and find me sound asleep on the floor tangled in my blanket.

What’s your favorite naughty food?
Pizza. I love pizza so much…

If you could travel to any point in the past, where would you go?
The 1960’s. Great music and a lot going on in the world. I think it would’ve been an exciting time to be alive.

What’s your favorite thing about training at P360?
The community and the challenge. The membership are all amazing and every workout challenges me in some way. You can usually find me at the 4pm class in Crown Point and the regulars at that time are a great crew.

What is your biggest goal moving into 2019?
Improving my front squat. I think I have a lot of room for improvement there and if I can do that it will help my clean as well.
