FRI: August OB Members of the Month

Cristina Toner

Cristina is one of OB’s “First 50” members, and absolutely brings it at 6am consistently. She is usually one of the first members to show up in the morning, with a sunny smile and a great attitude, ready to work hard. Never one to shy away from the intensity of a workout or learning something new, Cristina really knows how to push herself and get the most out of the hour, while still chatting with friends and having a blast, resting to dance. Cristina has found a ton of progress in strength and also her speed and work capacity, most recently landing on the top 5 leaderboard for “Ms. Silver”. We are really happy for Cristina’s achievements and consistent progress, and stoked to congratulate her!

How old are you, and where are you from?
Oh Geez, don’t you know never to ask a lady her age. I’m 41 from Saginaw, Michigan!

What do you do for work?
I am an import /export coordinator for a dental lab.

What do you do for fun outside of P360?
I love to read, hang out with friends, cook, drink wine, and really all activities.

How has P360 affected your life?
Joining P360 was the best thing I did since moving to San Diego from Houston, TX, 7 months ago.The community has been so welcoming since the first day. I have made some great friends ( 6 AM crew is the best)! All this while getting in shape, because you guys kick my butt every time.

What are your favorite, and least favorite exercises?
My favorite exercise would be deadlifts or the runs. My least favorite exercise would be the bike, it is the devil.

What is the hardest thing you have done, physically, in the gym?
When we had to run 800 meters then burpees then run 800 meters then burpees then run 800 meters and finish with more burpees, that one was a killer. Oh and having to do it again at the end of the month!

What is your most proud achievement at P360?
I was super excited that I was able to Row 1222 meters in 5 min the other day. I had never rowed until I joined P360.

What is a hidden talent of yours?
This is a very hard question. I guess I’m really good at flip cup.

What is an embarrassing fact most people don’t know about?
That I got in a couple of fist fights when I was in high school.

If money was no concern, what would be your dream job?
I would want to do something similar to Anthony Bourdain. But I would not be able to eat some of the super weird stuff.

What is the biggest overall improvement you’ve made, since joining P360?
My overall strength. I am faster and stronger than I was 5 months ago!

What’s your favorite song to sing out loud/karoke go-to?
Hold On by Wilson Phillips

What is the most valuable piece of coaching you’ve received?
All of it!  Slow down, focus on my form. Once I do that everything comes together.

Which public figure or celebrity would you put in the dunk tank?
All the Kardashians, I just can’t deal with them.

What’s your favorite place to eat in San Diego?
That is a hard one, put I go to Mike’s tacos a lot!

What famous person (alive or not) would you  most like to have a drink with and what would you buy them?
Marilyn Monroe, champagne.

What are your Top 3 movies of all time?
Goonies, All Harry Potter Movies, and Sixteen Candles.

Do you sleep with the sheets tucked in or out?
I am somewhere in-between.

What’s a funny story from your childhood?
That I bet one of my dad’s friends I could eat more pizza than him. I was tiny little 10 year old and he was over 6 FT 300 LBS…I WON! I ended up eating a whole large.

What’s your favorite naughty food?
Tacos, pizza, pasta, and ice cream…..Oh I was only supposed to pick one. I really enjoy bad food, half the reason I work out.

If you could travel to any point in the past, where would you go?
Late 60’s, I’m very much a hippie!

What’s your favorite thing about training at P360?
I really like that the coaches are very knowledgeable. The focus is about doing things correct instead of just throwing around super heavy weights. Plus P360 community is great, it is like a very large family!

What is your biggest goal moving into 2018?
Hmm…My goal for the rest of the year would be on the barbell lifts. My form has progressed, but I still have a lot of work to do. Also just staying consistent.

Wes Carlin

Wes is OB Member #51. Since his first day he has been a very focused and hard working member. With a lot of natural strength and a focused attitude, Wes has really stepped up to the challenge of learning some new movements and made a lot of quick progress. He takes coaching and applies it immediately, works hard without complaints, and attacks every workout with intensity, while also being one of the most reliable cheerleaders for others in the room. Wes has been diving into the Advanced timed challenges as of late, finding himself in the #2 spot for “Hell’s Bells”, by far one of the gnarliest benchmarks we have. We’re proud to have Wes in OB, and excited to see where his hard work takes him. Congratulations Wes!

How old are you, and where are you from?
I’m 34 and originally from Erie, PA. Yes, hometown of the collar bomber (aka Netflix series “Evil Genius”) but I’d like to think Erie is known for significantly more positive pop culture such as the Tom Hanks/Liv Tyler movie “That Thing You Do” (clearly an instant classic).

What do you do for work?
I work for a clinical research organization in Chula Vista that specializes in managing clinical studies for diabetes and other metabolic disease research. I’m basically the numbers guy, which baffles me as I can’t even seem to add my times correctly after a timed PPB…weird.

What do you do for fun outside of P360?
Camping and hiking are on the top of my list and I would get lost in the wilderness every weekend if my schedule permitted. I’m an outdoors person and just enjoy getting out of the hussle and bussle of a city and be surrounded by mountains and trees.

How has P360 affected your life?
I honestly can say that the P360 community has made me wake up everyday motivated to tackle whatever life throws my away. This place genuinely lifts us up and enhances us as individuals and at the same time creates a fun community of people from all different walks of life.

What are your favorite, and least favorite exercises?
I would say favorite and least favorite exercise choices are fluid.  I used to dread the assault bike especially when it was preceded by the words “10 cal” but have learned to channel my daily stress into the move in order to survive it. I tend to enjoy the 100-200 meter sprints while simultaneously dodging cars in OB.

What is the hardest thing you have done, physically, in the gym?
Most difficult thing is to peel my eyes away from Coach Lenny’s stupendous gym outfits on holiday workouts.

What is your most proud achievement at P360?
I’m definitely proud of being nominated here and have only to thank all my fellow members who always provide motivation and support to everyone day in and day out and the solid coaching staff who dedicate an incredible amount of time to provide such an awesome experience for all of us.

What is a hidden talent of yours?
I’d have to say my lack of short term memory, which can be a blessing and a curse at times, all depends on how you look at it.

What is an embarrassing fact most people don’t know about?
Not really embarrassing but more of a quirky fact…I was born with 6 fingers on each hand which were removed right after birth. I still haven’t forgiven my parents for that decision as I could have been a sports or music phenom with an extra finger on each hand.

If money was no concern, what would be your dream job?
Owning a piece of land in the mountains and creating camp sites to rent with communal space for people to gather and share their love of the outdoors.

What is the biggest overall improvement you’ve made, since joining P360?
I’d have to say my overall conditioning work. I was a competitive swimmer and water polo player all the way through college and since then I have never challenged myself physically as I did back in the day. P360 has renewed that desire to push my body further and motivate me to take on the challenge and advanced portions of the programming that are offered on the board periodically.

What’s your favorite song to sing out loud/karaoke go-to?
As we all know, I’m such a loud person so karaoke is one of my favorite past times. I’m going with “Lightning Crashes” by Live. The way the song builds up in intensity to the point where you find yourself air jamming alone in the corner of the bar.

What is the most valuable piece of coaching you’ve received?
Commit to the lift. Have your mental and physical routine in check before approaching the bar/kb/weight.

Which public figure or celebrity would you put in the dunk tank?
Currently and hopefully for only the next 2 years (maybe less), the Orange Sphincter in the Oval office.

What’s your favorite place to eat in San Diego?
Hungry Lu’s on Voltaire. The OB special personal pizza with canolis and coconut macaroons for dessert.

What famous person (alive or not) would you  most like to have a drink with and what would you buy them?
Teddy Roosevelt, camp side in any one of our amazing national parks with a bottle of bourbon for each of us.

What are your Top 3 movies of all time?
Dazed and Confused, Steel Magnolias, 180 Degrees South

Do you sleep with the sheets tucked in or out?
My feet are usually hanging off of the bed so ALWAYS sheets out, there’s no time to be constricted.

What’s a funny story from your childhood?
Not from childhood but early 20’s as I was giving the best man speech at my brother’s wedding. I recollected a story about my brother and his bride being caught in a risque situation by my Dad when they were in high school.  Turns out that story was actually about my brother and an ex-girlfriend of his (reference my hidden talent above). I don’t think my sister-in-law has ever forgiven me for that. However, I’d have to say my toast at the end of the speech was on par.

What’s your favorite naughty food?
Donuts for days. I have a major sweet tooth.

If you could travel to any point in the past, where would you go?
I’d have to say the late 50’s and throughout the 60’s mainly to experience the emergence of rock n’ roll, the British invasion, and the counter-culture of that time.

What’s your favorite thing about training at P360?
No matter the workout, I’m a split second from walking outside and vomiting. Keep up the intense programming, coaches!

What is your biggest goal moving into 2018?
I’m a big believer in continuous improvement in all facets of my life. As I get older and (in my mind) a bit wiser, I begin to value the need to deviate from the status quo and recognize the areas that I would like to enhance or new skill sets that I would like to delve into for continuous improvement of my overall well being. Onward and upward in 2018!
