FRI: Domino Habits

Most of us have one habit in our day that if we achieve it, it acts as a domino to other successful habits.

For some, it’s making the bed or the routine of healthy breakfast. For others, it’s hitting the gym first thing in the morning. If you pay close enough attention, you will likely discover what that habit is, and knowing it will allow you to free yourself from the chains of “motivation.” What many of us perceive as a lack of motivation is really just poor habit formation, and good habits beget other good habits.

For me, my domino habit is simply filling up my water flask first thing in the morning. I couldn’t tell you why, but it works for me. If I’ve had thirty ounces of water the first hour I am awake, I tend to chase healthy habits in the subsequent hours to follow.

If you struggle at identifying your domino habit, try keeping a journal for a few weeks of what you do throughout the day. On days you were more successful than others, see what adds up and is consistent across most of them.

All it takes is one for many to fall.
